"Georges St. Pierre was the first do it, and it's just sort of an inside joke," Evans said.

Evans said St. Pierre had heard it was supposed to bring good luck -- according to some ancient fighting myths, anyway. And if there's anything the New Mexico-based Team Jackson group knows, it's unity. Led by famed fight strategist and head trainer Greg Jackson, the team has created a sense of brotherhood among team members Evans, St. Pierre, Keith Jardine, Nate Marquardt, Joey Villasenor and others.

"Georges said it was supposed to good luck or something, so I said, 'Cool, alright,'" Evans said, laughing.

"That shirt, it's [Gates'] mugshot," Evans said. "He was arrested in Albuquerque, N.M. He started off Microsoft in the basement of the Bank One Building. That's right next to the (Team Jackson) gym.

That's the only association right now, but the team is hopeful Gates could become more involved with Team Jackson someday.

"Maybe one day he'll be part of my crew," Evans joked.

Evans knew people might be confused those things, and it's been easy for him to laugh it off. However, there's been another byproduct from this past weekend's win, and it's no laughing matter.

"It just bothers me that people are so quick to be so judgmental and negative toward me even when I win a fight," Evans said.

"People are just so upset that I won this fight," Evans said. "They're like, 'Oh, those antics, he's such a showboater.' I'm like, 'How was I showboating?' They way I move is the way I move. When I wrestled in college, I wrestled the exact same way. I have a lot of movement. That's just the way I move. That's what makes me feel comfortable, and people just get so mad about that.

"(UFC broadcaster) Joe Rogan is like, 'I don't know if Rashad Evans is trying to throw [Liddell] off his game or of he's trying to showboat. First of all, you showboat when you do something. If I haven't done anything, there's nothing to showboat about.

"I'm just trying to get my game going. I'm just like, 'What are you talking about?' If Anderson Silva did it, it would be 'superb technique,' but when I do it, it's showboating."

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder Evan Tanner
was found dead near Palo Verde, Calif. on Monday. He was 37 years old. His
management team at DFS Agency confirmed his death to MMAWeekly.com.Tanner had trekked into the desert on a journey to “cleanse” himself, according to Douglas
Vincitorio of DFS. “He went out to the desert to do a ‘cleansing’ as he called
it. Kind of like ‘Survivor Man.’” These short trips were not new to Tanner, said
Vincitorio. It is something that he has done numerous times over the years.“What
we were told is that (sheriff’s officials who found him) believe his motorcycle
had run out of gas, so he went to walk out in like 115 to 118-degree heat,” said
Vincitorio. “He was miles away from his camp. That’s where the helicopter found
him. Right now, they just think that he succumbed to the heat.”Tanner had
apparently told friends before he left that if they hadn’t heard from him in a
couple of days, they should contact officials, which is what happened. When he
stopped responding to text messages, friends waited a couple of days and then
notified officials at the Imperial County Sherrif’s Department on Friday. A
search ensued and Tanner’s body was found on Monday.On Aug. 10, Tanner wrote a
blog on Spike TV’s website, proclaiming his desire to start an adventure in the
desert east of his new home in Oceanside, Calif. An avid outdoorsman and
wandering spirit, he wanted to escape civilization for a while. “I'm not just
going out into the desert, I'm going out into the desert to hunt for lost
treasure,” he wrote. “I'm going on a pilgrimage of sorts, a journey to solitude,
to do some thinking, and to pay my respects to the great mysteries.”On Aug. 16,
Tanner wrote about collecting supplies for his journey, and wrote about the
dangers he might face.“I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure
of my equipment, could cost me my life,” he said. “I've been doing a great deal
of research and study. I want to know all I can about where I'm going, and I
want to make sure I have the best equipment.”Of course, this led followers of
his blog to fear for his safety, as they often did when Tanner reported his
frequent by-the-seat-of-his-pants adventures. In a blog dated Aug. 27, Tanner
tried to calm his audience.“This isn't a version of ‘Into the Wild,’” he wrote.
“I'm not going out into the desert with a pair of shorts and a bowie knife, to
try to live off the land. I'm going fully geared up, and I'm planning on having
some fun.”But he also affirmed that things could go wrong if his equipment
wasn’t up to snuff. “I do plan on going back pretty far, so I did mention in one
of my posts that I wanted to make sure to have good quality gear,” he said. “Any
failure of gear out in the desert could cause a problem.”On Sept. 2, Tanner
wrote his final blog entry, documenting a training session at a facility in
Oceanside. The Amarillo, Texas native was a high school wrestling stand out who
won the state championships his junior and senior years despite only getting
into the sport as a sophomore. He entered mixed martial arts in 1997 encouraged
by friends. Tanner rose to the top of the mixed martial arts world by winning
the UFC middleweight title over David Terrell at UFC 51: "Super Saturday" Feb.
5, 2005. Tanner last competed in the UFC on June 21 losing to Kendall Grove by
split decision. “He will obviously be sorely missed,” said Vincitorio. Adding,
“I think that Evan would want to be remembered as a very complex man with many
layers, not just a fighter.”Tanner was surely a unique personality. He’s
eccentric spirit and competitive nature will be sorely missed in the MMA
community.

According to New Mexico Sports News NM Boxer David Martinez will not be going for the NABF title...

David Martinez will battle unbeaten Yonnhy Perez Friday in a ten round
bout, but it won't be for a title. The bout was proposed as an NABF Bantamweight
crown, but there wasn't enough time to sanction a title defense by current
champion Perez."We thought it was going to be for a title up until weigh-ins but
they told us there wasn't enough time to get officials and all the other things
that go with sanctioning: Said Martinez. When asked what his game plan is for
Perez Martinez said he isn't planning anything special. "No more game planning,
last I tried that it didn't work, so I'm going to go round by round and do what
works for me"Martinez weighed in at 116.5 while Perez hit 118. The fight will be

EDMONTON -- Subbing for an injured Ben Henderson on less than four-week's notice, fast-rising lightweight Donald Sanchez has agreed to face dangerous undefeated lightweight Joe Heiland (4-0) at MFC 18: Famous on Friday, September 26.
2-1 in three MFC bouts, Sanchez (13-7) who made his promotional and 155-pound debut against Ryan "The Kid" McGillvray at MFC 13: Lucky in August 2007, has continually improved since, developing into a worthy contender for the yet-to-be contested MFC lightweight strap. Now he'll get his chance to earn his title shot with a win over Heiland.
MFC president and owner Mark Pavelich confirmed today that the bout will determine which of the two fighters will contend for the inaugural lightweight title later this year. Pavelich says Sanchez, who trains alongside WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit at Tom Vaughn's F.I.T NHB gym in Albuquerque, NM has earned his shot at the number one contender match-up with Heiland.
"Sanchez really impressed me in his last fight at MFC 17. He absolutely destroyed Jason Maxwell who is no joke himself. The guy has a win over Jens Pulver and Sanchez ran through him, Pavelich explains. "He matches up really well against Joe Heiland. Either guy can take this fight which makes the bout that much more exciting."
Also at the event, which will mark the twentieth held by the MFC, UFC veteran David Heath (9-3-0) will square off against Emanuel Newton. The bout will determine which of the two will face current MFC light heavyweight kingpin Roger Hollett at MFC 19: Long Time Coming November 28.

R1-What got you your start in MMA? Give your background? Where you Train?
I honestly started 12 years ago when I did amateur boxing but there was a lot of off time but then i was on the wrestling team in school so both of those are roots of mma. I love competition and winning a fight is immediate gratification of being the best. MMA has always grounded me, brought me back, as a teen I liked to party and with my parents and upbringing my life was a road map to destruction...so mma always kept me straight.I train at Team 4 Corners we are a sister school of Jackson's and I also train there just not this training camp
R2-Whats your thoughts on your opponent?
I don't really have any. I just want a good fight I'm fighting near my home and asked too. I probably won't fight this close to home again
R3-You will be fighting for KOTC this weekend, with the growth of Women's mma and mma in general what Org would you like to fight for in the future?
I've been hearing from elite xc for October. I fought for bodog and was going to get the contract but hey went under. Ultimately I want to be in the UFC
R4-Take us though a day of training for your upcoming fight?
Wake up take my daughter to school, teach kickboxing, then train kickboxing and wrestling,do a private lesson,then teach another kickboxing class then train 3-4 hours oh yea I eat. I'm busy busy it's hard being a single mom and a fighter,all the guys that have kids just leave them with their wife ...I can't leave her she comes with me.

FARMINGTON — Not that Rylan Sandoval needed any extra motivation for his mixed martial arts fight Saturday, but that's the reality two weeks after his sponsor and good friend, Josh Bell, committed suicide.
Sandoval will try to improve his record to 6-0 Saturday at Ute Mountain Casino in Cortez in a 155-pound tussle against Aztec's Ambross Teasyatwho.
Sandoval, a budding 23-year-old talent from Farmington, is dedicating the weekend fight to Bell, who owned The Zone — a clothing store in the Animas Valley Mall that serves as Sandoval's lone sponsor. The two friends talked the same day Bell killed himself at the age of 22.
"I've got the most anger in my mind than about any fight I've had," Sandoval said of the emotions stemming from Bell's death. "I haven't really been angry for any of my fights, but for this fight, I'm really mad." While the main event is Saturday evening, Sandoval faces an equally daunting task today and Friday. Boasting a current weight of 167 pounds, he needs to drop down to 155 by 7 p.m. Friday — roughly 24 hours before the fight. Thus, Sandoval will be dieting to the extreme. He admits the past week has included meals comprised primarily of salad and turkey. Water, too. Through Wednesday, Sandoval was consuming two gallons of water a day, a technique designed to help him make weight. "I'm really nervous," he said when asked about losing 12 pounds. "I'm going to take it easy, but I'm not going to drink hardly anything, not going to eat too much at all. And then run again (today)." Friday offers more of the same.
"Put on the plastic suit in the morning and sit in the sun until I sweat off 12 pounds," Sandoval quipped. A technical fighter, Sandoval is a kickboxing specialist. He likes to stay on his feet and force his opponent to adapt to his style. So far, that approach has worked as Sandoval sports an unblemished mark that includes two knockouts and a pair of submissions. Saturday, his first bout since February when he successfully defended his Desert Xtreme Lightweight belt, Sandoval will hook up with Teasyatwho, who he described as more of a street fighter. The bout is slated for three five-minute rounds, though Sandoval hopes to cut it short via a knockout.
"I feel like I'm really well-rounded," he said. "I'm going to keep on my feet and just try and knock him out." Sandoval wasn't supposed to fight Teasyatwho, but Donny Martinez backed out — the second time that's happened — leaving Sandoval looking for an opponent. His battle Saturday is one of 13 fights on the King of the Cage card. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and tickets are still available. Mixed martial arts derived from the former no-holds barred clashes, though MMA is more technical, rewards talent over sheer power and prohibits a handful of nasty moves — eye-gouging, headbutts and groin shots, for example. Sandoval, who trains twice a day in addition to four- and five-mile runs, practices a little bit of everything at the Team 4 Corners gym. He kickboxes, spars, wrestles and performs jujitsu and plyometrics. All the hard work gets put to the test Saturday, when Sandoval hopes to continue his ascent of the MMA ranks. And naturally, 6-0 sounds much better than 5-1. "Hopefully, I'll be 6-0. That's extremely important — I don't want to lose until I've gotten into a big company," he said. "I refuse to lose in my head." Team 4 Corners owner and Sandoval's trainer, Floyd Sword, expects a mismatch between his pupil and Teasyatwho. "Honestly, I think his opponent made a mistake by saying he'd fight him. Rylan's at another level," Sword said, before noting that Teasyatwho could be chasing retribution for a previous loss to another Team 4 Corners fighter. "He might be looking for some

redemption, but he picked the wrong guy."

WEC featherweight Leonard Garcia (11-3) is prepping for his Sept. 10 fight with Jens Pulver (22-9-1) -- and a potential title fight with WEC title-holder Urijah Faber (21-1). Gracia discussed the possibility of the championship bout while a guest on Monday's edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). According to Garcia, WEC officials have essentially promised him the title shot if he beats Pulver -- and they've already scheduled both Garcia and Faber for a public-relations stop south of the border just a week after their upcoming fights.So, could the WEC be headed to Mexico for a Faber vs. Garcia fight? "They're flying me out six days after the (Pulver) fight to Mexico City to do a press conference and to make a huge announcement," Garcia said. "As I understand it, both Urijah and I are going. ... I think both of us just need to hold up our ends of the bargain on Sept. 10. "So yeah, you essentially hit the nail on the head." For the Garcia-Faber fight to happen, though, Faber also has to take care of business on Sept. 10. The longtime champ faces Mike Brown (17-4) in the night's main event. If the stars align, though, and both fighters win, Faber and Garcia could be the first headliners ever to represent Zuffa LLC in Mexico, which UFC and WEC officials have targeted as a definite destination for future expansion. Garcia, though, knows he has a tough fight with Pulver, and that's why he thinks a victory earns him a shot at the belt. "If I can do to Pulver what I have planned and what we think I'm going to do, which is finish him, we're going to turn back and say, 'Hey, we finished him in less than three rounds, and Urijah didn't finish him in five,'" Garcia said. Regardless, Garcia said fans should expect fireworks. "Styles make fights," he said. "(We) have styles that work well for the fans. I don't think Jens knows how to back away. I don't know how to go in reverse. It's going to be one of those fights that is beautiful on paper, and it's going to be one fans don't want to miss." Garcia will fight for the first time since making his WEC debut in February at WEC 32. There, Garcia picked up a quick, 91-second TKO of Hiroyuki Takaya. However, soon after the win, the former UFC fighter was arrested for alleged involvement in a Texas-based drug ring. Garcia, who continually maintained he was the victim of guilt by association, was recently cleared of all pending federal charges. In an interview with MMAjunkie.com soon after the charges were dropped, Garcia said he hung around with the wrong person three years ago and suffered the consequences. "Growing up, I was always taught that if you don't put your hand in the cookie jar, you don't get in trouble," Garcia said. "But, the legal system is a little different. If you're too close to the cookie jar, something can go wrong, and that's what happened in my case. "I had a bunch of friends that were taking different avenues in life. I fought for a living during those years, and you really don't have anybody to hang out with besides other fighters because they do the same thing you do. But in my situation in Texas, there weren't really any MMA schools, so the people I hung out with really don't go to work. They never went to work. You know -- I m mean, all I would tell people is that it's one of those things you have to go through. I told people a million times to watch who they hang out with. My parents always told me that. "It had to happen to me for me to see what could actually happen." Now, clear of the charges and with his career back on track, Garcia can see the silver lining to the situation. "It made my family get a lot closer," he said. "My little brothers, they think I'm like a superhero. 'Yeah, that's my brother.' Everywhere they go, they tell people about me and stuff like that. It was just terrible for my family, but they were always supportive. They didn't let me get down on myself." He said the WEC provided the same type of support. "The WEC had my back the whole time," Garcia said. "They said they would give me a big fight as soon as I come back." As it turns out, it may be two big fights. "[We] need to be smart about how we use our resources to produce the best possible events for our fans and our broadcast partners," Lappen stated. "This move lets us direct our energies toward building momentum for our ShoXC and EliteXC fights on Showtime and CBS in the fall."

***A source close to the EliteXC event has informed N.M.C.S that another reason the Sep.20th event was canceled, was due to "EliteXC/ProElite Officials" not feeling comfortable with a show that didn't have a strong "NAME" as a Co-Main event to Villasenor's fight. My background is wrestling. I started wrestling at the age of six. Well after college there was nothing else to compete in so one day I went up to Jackson's gym and got a taste of the mma game and ever since that day I was hooked. I feel that mma is a good outlet for wrestlers now it’s our turn to get respect!

R2- What's your thoughts on your opponent for this weekends Bike n' Brawl?

Well he has been on my mind a lot ever since the last fight. He has been a good sport through all this. But I really don't like him at the moment he cut my eye for starters and I have to cut to 125 again not to happy about that. But I do have to thank him it has been real easy to motivate myself in training. This is the best shape I have ever been in before a fight. I have learned a lot about my self as a fighter for this fight. He will be facing a different man this time.

R3- I read in a interview with your opponent that he brought in State Wrestling Champion's to train for you and your style, Are you doing anything different for the rematch?

Well that means he is worried about my style no doubt I controlled the whole fight last time with my wrestling skills. I have wrestled at the college level I am a three time state champ and a national champ I have beat guys on the Olympic ladder that doesn't worry me at all. But this is a fight not a wrestling match. I am going to beat him in all aspects of the mma game this time. My camp has changed a lot for this fight I am going back to my roots my Uncle Lenny Lovato has been my main trainer for this fight. No one knows how to train me physically or mentally like him. My game plan is not going to change this fight. The fight will end on the ground. Only thing that will change is my intensity I gave Jose to much respect last time, now I know what he brings to the table. I am not impressed at all. I am confident that I will win this fight.

R4- You train out of Jackson's MMA right? Your opponent said he has trained at Jackson's, have you ever trained with him?

For this fight I am not training at Jackson's. I am training at Albuquerque Kickboxing with Coach Ray Yee, He is working on my stand up, and Coach Lenny is working on everything else. I don't recall ever crossing Jose's path except in the last fight.

R5- Is there anything you would like to say to all your fans and sponsors?

N.M.C.S Exclusive: Arichie's manager clears the air on his fighters injury...

N.M.C.S. would like to clear a few things up about NM Boxer Archie Ray Marquez' injury. N.M.C.S. just got off the phone with Archie's manager and he said Archie is off the Aug.30th show at Sky City Casino with a injury, but the injury itself wasn't reported correctly.... We reported the injury was torn cartilage on his left ribs. Archie's manager said it was dislocated cartilage on his rib, the difference is worlds apart... If it was torn cartilage it would have required surgery to repair with a long layoff, with dislocated cartilage you don't need surgery with a maximum layoff of 6 weeks. Archie's manger also said Archie is already jogging but when he tries to throw punches he still feels discomfort. Archie's camp expects him to have a full recovery and may be back in the ring as early as September.

Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) (17-2-0) Against the unquestioned top contender in the division, Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) delivered arguably the finest performance of his career and smashed Jon Fitch (Pictures) over 25 lopsided minutes. With the victory in the books, there's still a major bout with Thiago Alves (Pictures) looming if Alves can beat Diego Sanchez (Pictures) on Oct. 25. But first, "Rush" will renew his rivalry with B.J. Penn (Pictures) in the second chapter to their contentious March 2006 affair. Come this December, the rematch could be the year's biggest bout.
4. Diego Sanchez (Pictures) (19-2-0) If Sanchez needed an impressive performance on June 21 to put himself back into contention at 170 pounds, he got it. He showed off vastly improved standup en route to his sensational third-round stoppage of a tough Luigi Fioravanti (Pictures). Things only pick up from here, though, as the "Nightmare" is penciled in to meet Brazilian dynamo Thiago Alves (Pictures) at UFC 90 on Oct. 25 in Chicago.
10. Carlos Condit (Pictures) (23-4-0) In another great WEC main event, Condit survived a life-and-death affair with an incredibly game Hiromitsu Miura (Pictures) to take a fourth-round stoppage in their taxing WEC title bout. While Condit's struggles may have tempered the enthusiasm for him to head to the UFC, welterweight challenges within the WEC seem all but exhausted for the 24-year-old New Mexico native.

Our good friends over at MMAWeekly have a interview up with Cage Rage vet Paul Daley in which he confirms he will be heading to NM to fight on the EliteXC card in September. He confirms it will be against a ex-IFL fighter...

“I will be fighting Sept. 20 in New Mexico, most likely against an undefeated ex-IFL fighter who cannot be named yet,” said Daley. “I'm really looking forward to it".

Daley also lets it be known he wants a title shot and wants to fight the best EliteXC can offer....

“I beat this guy (on Sept. 20), I will no doubt be fighting for the EliteXC title next!” stated Daley.

Daley doesn’t lack confidence to challenge the best that EliteXC has to offer. “Eddie Alvarez, Jake Shields, Nick “The Goat” Thompson, K.J. Noons, whoever is put in front of me, I’m going to be knocking them out. My record at the moment is like a 73% knockout rate. That is going to go a lot higher, you better believe that.”
