Henry Cejudo, a Los Angeles native who came to Las Cruces in 1991 when he was just 4 years old and lived there for the next 2 1/2 years, this morning won a gold medal in the men's freestyle 55-kilogram (121 pound) wrestling competition at the Olympics in Beijing, the Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting. Cejudo, who finished 31st in last year's world championships -- his only prior tournament at this level, defeated Tomohiro Matsunaga of Japan in a best-of-three match, assuring the United States of its ninth consecutive Olympics with a gold medal in freestyle wrestling, according to the Sun-News. Cejudo, the son of undocumented immigrants from Mexico, passed up a college career to become an Olympic athlete and now lives in Colorado Springs, the Sun-News reported.
